Texting while driving is becoming a hot issue in the United States and UK. With the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA) releasing data that shows 75% of accidents are preceded by some king of distraction, with texting FIVE times more likely to end up in an accident - more and more cities and states are enacting laws to
curb texting while driving.
The UK took extreme measures when it released a PSA with graphic details that caused a huge uproar with the public. The
Anti-Texting PSA is so graphic that YouTube has an adult graphics viewing warning attached to the anti-texting video.
In Oak Grove, California the family of a teenage girl whose
texting while driving caused a head-on collision killing both herself and the other driver released a message via the local media asking citizens to pay attention to the road and not get distracted by texting or calling while driving.
KOAT TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico featured an
anti-texting segment on how much more dangerous texting while driving is than other driving distractions such as talking on phone, playing with radio, etc. Footage from Clemson Research driving simulators revealed just how dangerous texting and driving really is.
When a Texas bus driver was recorded
texting while driving, the video reveals that the driver was so busy texting he paid no attention whatsoever to traffic stopped at a standstill and did not even slow down before ramming into the back of the stopped traffic. The 2 disabled passengers on the bus brought this video to the attention of the public.
In California, a fatal train derailment causing more than 25 fatalities was linked to the conductor’s texting while operating the train.
According to the NHSA:
Driver distraction was reported to have been involved in 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008 according to data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).*
An estimated 21 percent of injury crashes were reported to have involved distracted driving, according to data from the General Estimates System (GES).**
